In societies where modern conditions of production prevail, all life presents as an immense accumulation of spectacles. Everything that was directly lived has moved away into a representation…We must always remember, that our objective is not getting people to listen to convincing talks by expert leaders, but getting them to speak for themselves, in order to achieve, or at least strive toward, an equal degree of participation.”

The Society of the Spectacle. Guy Debord, Maître-penseur of the Situationist International, writer, film-maker, street-fighter and uber-critic of spectacular-capitalism, born Paris, 28th December 1931.

In this slim Situationist treatise on the human condition, Debord points at future social alienation, consumer capitalism, the ‘mask of total choice’ and the commodification of almost every aspect of life (including protest) whereby any notion of the authentic becomes almost impossible.
